Beacon Leadership

WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

WELCOME TO THE BEACON FAMILY

Founded on the principles of providing high-quality care and premium service, Beacon Clinic is a growing practice with people who are dedicated to making patients feel as comfortable and cared for as possible.

Our physicians and advanced practice providers have developed long-term relationships with other medical professionals and members of the community. Beacon recognizes the value of collaboration and continuity of care with our healthcare peers, and we are committed to nurturing those connections while also serving our incredible community. Beacon’s mission is to build a patient-centered healthcare practice that incorporates the exceptional customer care and service that our founder, Dr. David Bartels, acquired as a child growing up in his parents’ restaurants.

“Working with an incredible team to provide the highest quality of patient care has been an absolute dream come true.”
– Dr. Bartels

Dr. David Bartels

Chief Executive Officer

For Dr. Bartels, practicing medical oncology is a true passion. From the time he began pursuing medicine, he has always had a strong connection to cancer prevention and treatment, and he is dedicated to the advancement of the field and especially to providing exceptional care to all of his patients. As many of them will attest, Dr. Bartels always goes above and beyond for his patients.

Dr. Bartels treats all types of cancer and blood disorders. He opened Beacon Clinic for the purpose of creating a cancer center that treats patients and staff as family. “The culture at Beacon is something that I am very proud of—Beacon is often referred to as a happy place, which is not typically the first word that comes to mind when describing a cancer center.”

Dr. David Bartels moved to Coeur d’Alene from Iowa in 2014 and quickly fell in love with North Idaho. Dr. Bartels and his wife Krista are dedicated to the community and wonderful residents of North Idaho. Together they enjoy many of the wonderful outdoor activities the area has to offer, with cycling, snow skiing and fly fishing being a few of Dr. Bartels’ favorites. They also have three young children who keep them on their toes.

Krista Bartels, JD

Chief Operations Officer

Krista Bartels opened Beacon Clinic in 2018 alongside her husband, Dr. David Bartels, in support of the mission to provide patient-focused, compassionate cancer care to the rapidly growing community of Kootenai County and surrounding areas.

Krista graduated from the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration and from the University of Iowa College of Law with a Juris Doctor. During law school, she had the opportunity to work on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Krista then went on to practice law for several years in Iowa and Idaho, where she focused primarily on real estate law, business law, and estate planning.

Between launching Beacon and chasing after three small children, Krista has not had much free time in recent years, but she still considers yoga, traveling, and reading to be some of her favorite hobbies. She loves Coeur d’Alene and is grateful for the opportunity to raise a family and build a life here.

Shanya Wood

“Being able to watch a patient and their loved ones celebrate after completing treatment or listening to our billing team or care coordinator celebrate when they are able to help a patient with financial assistance through a grant or co-pay card; these moments make Beacon such a special place to work.”
– Shayna

Shayna Wood, CPA

Chief Financial Officer

Shayna joined the Beacon team full-time in late-2021. She first began working with Dr. David and Krista Bartels in 2018 when they started Beacon Clinic and spent three years working closely with them as their Certified Public Accountant. After spending 22 years in the public accounting arena, the growth of Beacon presented an incredible opportunity to try something new and take on the role of Beacon’s Chief Financial Officer.

As the daughter of a cancer survivor, getting the chance to be a part of Beacon’s overall mission of providing an unparalleled patient experience just feels right. Every member of the team, from the providers to the infusion nurses to the research department to the front office to the billing department, is just one big support system trying to find every opportunity to help the patient get the highest quality of patient care available. This collaboration and shared support for our patients is what drives Shayna to work every day and what motivates her to help Beacon grow so it can reach more patients and touch more lives.

Shayna grew up in Spokane, Washington and returned to Spokane after graduating from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Shayna and her husband and their two boys love playing in the snow during the winter, hunting for morels in the spring, playing in the local lakes and rivers during the summer, and enjoying a good bonfire in the fall.

Ciarah Fiscus

Chief People Officer

Ciarah joined Beacon in 2021, bringing with her over 6 years of Human Resource experience and a drive to make Beacon not only the best clinic for our patients to visit, but an exemplary working environment for our employees as well. She serves Beacon strategically to align our workforce with business initiatives while maintaining a workplace that promotes our mission to provide an unparalleled patient experience.

Like many others, Ciarah was drawn to a career in healthcare after experiencing a close family member needing a great deal of care and watching that process unfold. Seeing those health care workers in action, demonstrating unmatched compassion for others, was extremely moving. Working with such a dedicated team, providing such excellent care has been a dream come true.

Ciarah was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and returned in 2019 after spending a few great years in Boise, Idaho. She enjoys her wonderful life with her husband, son, and close-knit family, soaking up all that the PNW has to offer, and particularly spending time outside and in her garden.

Natalie is the Patient Access Manager at Beacon Clinic who has been providing financial support to patients and serving in the Oncology field for over 15 years. Her experience in Oncology truly began when she became a Certified Pharmacy Technician in Oregon.  Along with her love of patients, she also has a passion for their financial wellness.

Natalie devotes hours of her time and energy in investigating grants, co-pay cards and other financial assistance opportunities to help patients navigate their financial responsibilities so they can focus on themselves and their cancer journey to wellness.

Natalie grew up in Post Falls, Idaho where she met and married the love of her life in 1983.  They raised their family in Oregon by the Pacific Coast.  Then moved back home to Post Falls where they happily reside. Casey McCormick, PharmD

Pharmacy Manager
I came to Beacon with over ten years of experience in oncology. I have worked in community oncology in the Coeur d’Alene and Spokane area serving patients from all over the Pacific Northwest. I have participated in dozens of clinical trials, advancing care in the ever-changing world of cancer.

Prior to working in oncology, I spent almost ten years in hospital systems both in Idaho and Washington providing care ranging from rural medicine to critical care. I attended Washington State University’s College of Pharmacy were I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. I grew up in the CDA area and hope to stay here.

“I want all of our patients to have a lovely experience at Beacon. And that starts from the moment they walk in the front door.”
– Clare

Clare Jacobs

Patient Service Manager

With nearly seven years of experience in the medical field, Clare currently serves as the Front Office Manager at Beacon Clinic. Clare’s journey began in ENT, where she started in an entry-level position and gradually worked her way up. It was during this time that she developed a deep passion for the healthcare industry.

Clare had the privilege of witnessing the growth and progress of Beacon, a clinic she has admired since its early days. In fact, when Dr. Bartels, one of the founders of Beacon, visited her previous clinic shortly after founding the center, she knew right then that she wanted to be part of the Beacon team. She is incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to fulfill that dream now.

Clare’s connection to the cancer field is personal — her mother is a two-time cancer survivor. Her first diagnosis occurred when Clare was a child and watching her mother navigate that difficult journey profoundly shaped her desire to work in healthcare. From a young age, she knew she wanted to help in the cancer field in some capacity, and now she is honored to contribute to that mission at Beacon.

Clare is deeply committed to Beacon’s mission of treating patients like family. She often reminds her staff to approach each patient, whether in person or over the phone, with the same care and compassion she would want for her own mother. It’s this level of dedication and empathy that drives us to provide the highest quality care.

Originally from a small farming town in Eastern Washington, Clare now lives in Coeur d’Alene with her husband and, hopefully soon, a dog! Outside of work, they enjoy discovering new wine spots and spending time with friends.
