Our Story
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.
WELCOME TO THE BEACON FAMILY
Founded on the principles of providing high-quality care and premium service, Beacon Clinic is a growing practice with people who are dedicated to making patients feel as comfortable and cared for as possible.
Our physicians and advanced practice providers have developed long-term relationships with other medical professionals and members of the community. Beacon recognizes the value of collaboration and continuity of care with our healthcare peers, and we are committed to nurturing those connections while also serving our incredible community. Beacon’s mission is to build a patient-centered healthcare practice that incorporates the exceptional customer care and service that our founder, Dr. David Bartels, acquired as a child growing up in his parents’ restaurants.
Beacon Clinic
The name Beacon Clinic is inspired by our team’s objective to support and guide our patients through their health journey, as well as provide hope and a sense of security during a challenging and emotional time in their life.
Our logo, a lighthouse shining a light out toward troubled waters, represents our team sending out a signal to direct and guide our patients to Beacon Clinic, where they will receive compassionate care from a group of individuals who will fight tirelessly for them and provide never-ending support throughout their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
Our Mission
To meet patients wherever they are on their journey and walk with them on that journey; to provide compassionate, personalized cancer care for an unparalleled patient experience.
Core Values
We welcome you and your loved ones to experience a new approach to wellness.
Beacon Clinic was founded by Dr. David Bartels in 2018. Today, it is one of the premier oncology care clinics in northern Idaho, providing comprehensive care and support to cancer patients who are being treated for a wide variety of cancers.
In working with cancer patients, Dr. Bartels realized that the traditional oncology practice does not meet all of a cancer patients’ needs. So he asked himself a very straightforward question: If I or someone I loved was diagnosed with cancer, what would I want the care to look like?
Every day, the answer to that question is what Beacon strives to achieve. In the medical realm, Beacon offers a variety of cancer treatments in-house, including immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. In addition, Beacon is constantly expanding its network of cancer care specialists and providers nationwide, including working with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the Huntsman Cancer Clinic, and the Mayo Clinic. Beacon’s physicians and caregivers will do whatever it takes to provide patients with access to the best possible care, including participation in ground-breaking clinical trials, in-house oral medication dispensing, and onsite phlebotomy services.
Beyond medical care, Beacon recognizes that cancer and cancer treatment have repercussions throughout a person’s life and family. Consequently, Beacon proudly offers care and counseling with regards to nutrition, finances, lodging, and rehabilitation.
Today, our Coeur d’Alene facility is currently undergoing expansion to enable Beacon to assist even more cancer patients and to provide a wider selection of in-house care options, like Rheumatology. As Beacon continues to grow, it remains committed to not losing sight of its original mission: providing patients a guiding beacon of hope in one of the most challenging stages of their lives.
A New Approach to Cancer Care
Holistic, Patient-Centered Approach
At Beacon, we put YOU, the patient, first. We treat the whole person, not just the disease.
Our objective is to keep our center and services as patient-centered as possible, meeting each patient where he or she is on their cancer journey. We encourage you and your loved ones to try and experience a new approach to cancer care.
Shayna Wood, CPA
Chief Financial Officer
Shayna joined the Beacon team full-time in late-2021. She first began working with Dr. David and Krista Bartels in 2018 when they started Beacon Clinic and spent three years working closely with them as their Certified Public Accountant. After spending 22 years in the public accounting arena, the growth of Beacon presented an incredible opportunity to try something new and take on the role of Beacon’s Chief Financial Officer.
As the daughter of a cancer survivor, getting the chance to be a part of Beacon’s overall mission of providing an unparalleled patient experience just feels right. Every member of the team, from the providers to the infusion nurses to the research department to the front office to the billing department, is just one big support system trying to find every opportunity to help the patient get the highest quality of patient care available. This collaboration and shared support for our patients is what drives Shayna to work every day and what motivates her to help Beacon grow so it can reach more patients and touch more lives.
Shayna grew up in Spokane, Washington and returned to Spokane after graduating from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Shayna and her husband and their two boys love playing in the snow during the winter, hunting for morels in the spring, playing in the local lakes and rivers during the summer, and enjoying a good bonfire in the fall.
“Being able to watch a patient and their loved ones celebrate after completing treatment or listening to our billing team or care coordinator celebrate when they are able to help a patient with financial assistance through a grant or co-pay card; these moments make Beacon such a special place to work.”
– Shayna
“Working with an incredible team to provide the highest quality of patient care has been an absolute dream come true.”

Dr. David Bartels
Chief Medical Officer
For Dr. Bartels, practicing medical oncology is a true passion. From the time he began pursuing medicine, he has always had a strong connection to cancer prevention and treatment, and he is dedicated to the advancement of the field and especially to providing exceptional care to all of his patients. As many of them will attest, Dr. Bartels always goes above and beyond for his patients.
Dr. Bartels treats all types of cancer and blood disorders. He opened Beacon Clinic for the purpose of creating a cancer center that treats patients and staff as family. “The culture at Beacon is something that I am very proud of—Beacon is often referred to as a happy place, which is not typically the first word that comes to mind when describing a cancer center.”
Dr. David Bartels moved to Coeur d’Alene from Iowa in 2014 and quickly fell in love with North Idaho. Dr. Bartels and his wife Krista are dedicated to the community and wonderful residents of North Idaho. Together they enjoy many of the wonderful outdoor activities the area has to offer, with cycling, snow skiing and fly fishing being a few of Dr. Bartels’ favorites. They also have three young children who keep them on their toes.

Rose’s favorite quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Rose Miller, RN
Clinical Operations Director
Rose is our Clinical Operations Director and has been a Registered Nurse for over 37 years. She has dedicated her career to the Oncology field and has experience in Radiation, Medical Oncology/Hematology and Medical Oncology Research. Her last 25 years has been focused on building integrated Medical Oncology Research programs in community settings. She has established unified research programs in several oncology practices across the United States. She feels one of her greatest contributions to the oncology world has been her involvement with numerous drugs from early-stage research to market approvals.
Rose’s love of oncology was an early career path that started in the clinic rotation through the oncology ward in nursing school. Her passion for oncology came through witnessing the journey cancer patients and families go through. Having only a handful of treatment options as a young nurse prompted her love for research and the longing to bring more treatment options and build programs in community settings. Her career has led her to be a natural catalyst for change throughout her life professionally and personally.
Rose grew up as a country girl in Spokane, Washington and is married with 4 children and 4 grandchildren. She gives praise to her family for supporting her passion throughout her career and feels very honored to have the opportunity to work at Beacon Clinic where compassionate, quality patient care, along with providing cutting-edge treatments, is shared and continues to grow.
Ciarah Fiscus

Like many others, Ciarah was drawn to a career in healthcare after an experience where a close family member needed a great deal of care. Seeing those health care workers in action, demonstrating unmatched compassion for others, was extremely moving and made the choice to start at Beacon very easy. Working with such a dedicated team providing such excellent care has been a dream come true.
Ciarah was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and returned in 2019 after spending a few great years in Boise, Idaho. She enjoys her wonderful life with her husband, 9-year-old goldendoodle Ollie, and close-knit family soaking up the beautiful lake weather or spending time in her garden.
“Providing the ideal patient experience starts with happy employees. I am grateful and honored to have the opportunity to serve our community and contribute to Beacon being a wonderful place to come, no matter the circumstance.”

Prior to working in oncology, I spent almost ten years in hospital systems both in Idaho and Washington providing care ranging from rural medicine to critical care.
